Physical Education Department – Inspiring Active, Healthy Futures
Our Physical Education (PE) department is committed to promoting physical wellbeing, vigorous activity and a lifelong love of sport and movement. We believe every young person should have the opportunity to thrive through physical activity, developing the confidence, knowledge and motivation to stay active throughout their lives. We educate students through a diverse and engaging curriculum designed to build physical literacy, teamwork and personal development. Across each activity, students develop essential skills, compositional ideas and components of fitness that support both physical competence and personal growth.
Curriculum Time
- Key Stage 3: Students receive two hours of high-quality PE each week.
- Key Stage 4: Students access three hours of PE over their two-week timetable.
This structured provision ensures all pupils benefit from regular physical activity and a consistently high standard of teaching.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
To support and extend learning beyond the classroom, we offer a comprehensive programme of extra-curricular sport open to all students:
- Morning Clubs (7:40–8:10am):
Light activity and play to start the day positively. Students may attend in school uniform with trainers. - After-School Clubs (2:30–3:30pm):
A wide selection of sports and activities to develop skills, teamwork and enjoyment.
These sessions cater for all abilities, from beginners to advanced performers, and aim to stretch, challenge and inspire every participant.

At Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, pupils have access to a range of pathway options that support progression, aspiration and individual interest. These courses provide opportunities for all learners, whether they aspire to study sport further, enhance their practical performance, or deepen their understanding of the subject.

Key Stage 3
Core PE aims to maximise student development through participation in a range of physical activities. The course aims to develop physical competence, promote physical development, and reflect the value of participation both at school and throughout life. It aims to develop technical understanding and help establish self-esteem through the development of physical confidence. It also helps students cope with both success and failure in competitive and co-operative physical activities.
Key Stage 4
PE throughout key stage 4 involves a continuation of the themes studied at key stage three with two dedicated hours per week throughout years 9, 10 and 11. Students are given a greater role in deciding which activities to participate in and will still have opportunities to further develop as part of the department’s extensive extra-curricular programme.
GCSE PE
Studying GCSE Physical Education will open your eyes to the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have the chance to perform in three different sports through the non-exam assessment component, you will also develop wide ranging knowledge into the how and why of Physical activity and sport.
The combination of the physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for students. You can perform, and then through the academic study learn how to improve your performance though application of the theory.
Physical Education is learned about through a range of different contexts and the impact it has on both ours and other’s everyday lives. You will learn the reasons why we do things, why some people out perform others, mentally and physically. You will also delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and also gain an understanding of the consequences of inactivity and poor diet.
How will you be assessed?
60% – A total of two hours assessment split over two examination papers (2x 1 hour) taken at the end of the two year course.
30% – Non- Exam Assessment (NEA). Three practical performances
10% – Non- Exam Assessment (NEA). One Performance Analysis task.

The Cambridge Nationals in Sport Science offer learners the opportunity to study key areas of sport science including anatomy and physiology linked to fitness, health, injury and performance; the science of training and application of training principles, and psychology in sport and sports performance. Elite sport has embraced sport science disciplines wholeheartedly in the past few decades which considers every minute detail of an athlete’s training programme, rest time, environment and psychology in the pursuit of excellence. Lessons vary between practical and theory based. Pupils will learn about the ever changing sports industry, developing their understanding and appreciation of health-related fitness and sports and exercise through a selection of specialist units. Pupils will be encouraged to develop people, communication, planning and team-working skills.
How will I be assessed?
75% Written and practical coursework assessment through assignments and tasks (not based on practical ability).
25% Theory Examination.
